Episode 3: Come out of Babylon

Discussion Guide

  • In the opening scene, Agatha tells president Richardson, “I just don’t know what brings me joy anymore. And I don’t think it’s any of the things I’m doing.” What place should joy hold in the Christian walk or in different forms of ministry? Consider verses like Romans 12:12, Philippians 4:4, and Galatians 5:22-23. If Agatha confided in you, what advice or encouragement would you give her?

  • Dr. Joe and Kyle seem to have two different approaches to ministry. Joe is concerned with sharing the distinctly Seventh-day Adventist message. Kyle is concerned about providing physical and emotional care to children and families in need. What do you think should be the primary concerns of the SDA church, on a global scale as well as on a local scale?

  • While talking with his son, Pastor Stanton says, “Faith is not supposed to be easy.” Is this true? Why or why not?

  • In the debrief, Katelyn asks about when it is appropriate and inappropriate to compromise. What does healthy compromise look like and when should it be used?

  • In the debrief, Jon says, “When we’re coming up against disagreements and division, I think that [this] has to be the starting place. [First] a recognition that I could be wrong–it could be me who missed the right turn. And then two, regardless, taking the time to appreciate the people that we’re in conflict with.” Have you seen these principals used in dealing with conflict? What would it look like for a healthy church community to engage in conflict within itself?
